There remains significant scope to improve diversity and inclusion in organisations. One of the key factors highlighted by a number of people was the importance of good people management. As your workforce becomes more diverse your managers need to be aware of the issues and able to handle these appropriately. In particular you need to be able to deal swiftly and fairly with any allegations of discrimination. It is particularly important that leaders demonstrate their commitment to diversity and inclusivity; their actions speak louder than words and enter the folklore of the organisation. Several people recalled the instance of the prison governor who had interrupted an inspection when a respected dignitary had made an inappropriate comment. Leaders who are able to ‘call it’ in such situations make the difference between diversity being a policy and diversity being a living reality.
