Equality and Diversity is both a simple and a very complex issue.  In simple terms it is about securing and developing talent, in complex terms it is about being able to look beyond the symptoms to the causes of discrimination and to exclusion.  Fairhurst believes that ‘in many ways HR professionals seek to understand the complex issues without the requisite analytical skills and understanding to appreciate the connection between symptom and cause’.  Waters considers that as HR professionals ‘we are sometimes too narrow in our thinking, zeroing in on problems without fully understanding all the complexities of a situation.  Particularly in HR we need to be able to step back and consider the issue from different perspectives, to identify where the problem arises and to establish whether this problem is something that we can fix.
